Wastes of Lean

Lean thinking is concerned with improving business processes, or any type of activity, through applying key principles such as defining value, ensuring flow and removing or reducing waste. The origins of examining ‘waste’ came from Taiichi Ohno, a Toyota executive who identified ‘muda’ – the Japanese word for ‘waste’ – as something to be removed wherever possible.

If the areas where there is waste within a business process are identified, relevant actions to remove waste may be considered. Areas where waste may occur are sometimes known as the ‘eight wastes of Lean’. The mnemonic TIMWOODS provides a useful framework for remembering these eight areas; this mnemonic is described in Table 7.10.
